HIGHWAYS
AGENCY PRESS RELEASE
15 JANUARY 2008
£2
MILLION IMPROVEMENTS ON THE A52
BETWEEN
BINGHAM AND BARROWBY
The
Highways Agency will be carrying out major maintenance on the A52
between Bingham, Nottinghamshire, and Barrowby, near Grantham, Lincolnshire,
from Monday, 21 January until the end of April.
The
£2m improvements involve the resurfacing and partial reconstruction
of both carriageways on a 2.5 kilometre section of road between
Whatton Prison and Elton Road bridge, strengthening the bridge over
the River Smite at Whatton and renewing signs and road markings
on various sections along the entire 21 kilometre route.
To
minimise disruption to road users, the works will only be carried
out overnight, from 8pm to 6am, and at weekends, when traffic flows
are lightest.
Due
to the complex nature of the works and for the safety of road users
and the workforce, the reconstruction and resurfacing element of
the improvements will need a number of different traffic arrangements.
These
include a temporary 40mph speed limit, lane closures with temporary
traffic lights and a safety vehicle leading traffic through the
site in convoy at 10mph. There will also be full closures of the
A52 between Bingham and Barrowby on some weekday nights and full
24 hour closures between the same points on three weekends.
The
weekend closures will take place 24hours a day from 10pm Friday
until 6am Monday on 8 to 11, 15 to 18 and 22 to 25 February.
Dates
for the overnight weekday closures have yet to be confirmed but
will be published on the Highways Agency website, by the roadside
and in the media. It is also possible to sign up for email updates
as the scheme progresses at www.highways.gov.uk/a52renewalworks
The
A52 will be closed to all through traffic between Bingham and Barrowby
during the overnight and weeklend closures although controlled local
access will be maintained.
Traffic
will be diverted from the Saxondale roundabout at Bingham northbound
up the A46 to Newark, then the A1 southbound to the junction with
the A52 at Barrowby, or vice versa.
Access
to Cromwell Road, Conery Lane, Old Grantham Road (East) and Old
Grantham Road (West) in Whatton will be restricted on the nights
resurfacing is carried out. Local diversions will be clearly signed.
Residents,
businesses, Whatton Prison and bus companies have been informed
of the restrictions. Passengers needing more information about how
the changes will affect their bus services should contact the bus
company direct.
Highways
Agency project manager Kamaljit Khokhar said:
“The
work is necessary to ensure the continued safe provision of the
A52 and avoid the need for unplanned emergency repairs. When complete
road users will get a safer, smoother and quieter ride.
“We
will do everything possible to minimise disruption but delays are
inevitable so we advise people to allow extra time for their journeys,
particularly when the A52 is closed, and to take care while driving
through the works. We also recommend people visit the scheme's website
where they can register for free email updates.”
As
well as the website, people can also get information by emailing
the project team at a52renewalworks@highways.gsi.gov.uk

Bingham Market Place
A relatively small scheme
to upgrade the Market Place may soon come to fruition. The
signage will be rationalized (some removed, some replaced) and posts
painted black to match other street equipment. The lamp columns
will be repainted.
